Destiny King
Summer Resident
Destiny King (she/her) is an arts leader, musician, and advocate from rural North Carolina. She recently received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a minor in Arts Administration at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). For 3 years, Destiny served on the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) Board for the Collegiate Section. During her presidency, she founded the NCMEA Collegiate Conference Scholarships, spearheaded two days of chamber music for marginalized communities and often overlooked school programs at the NCMEA conference, and was a recipient of the Ruth Jewell Scholarship.
Destiny's primary instrument is the oboe and she has performed with UNCG’s Middle Eastern Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. Destiny currently performs and serves as Director of Marketing for Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony (ASWS). As an arts administrator, Destiny has interned in marketing positions at non-profit organizations including Lyrica Baroque, SHIELD Mentor Program, and Eastern Music Festival. Most recently, she completed the Hands-On Ticketing Track through Tessitura’s Career Accelerator Program to gain experience in a leading CRM software.
As a summer resident, Destiny's capstone, Amplifying the Voices of Black Pedagogy, sought to explore the arts education ecosystem of North Carolina and South Carolina by amplifying the voices of music educators through narrative storytelling to document evidence of the indoctrinated systemic barriers that arise in Black pedagogy in music education. In addition to her capstone, Destiny contributed to three Creative Generation blog series, Redefining Eldership, Hometown Stories, and Ways of Knowing, and completed data inquiry and meaning making on a diverse collection of projects.
