Advisory Committee and Case Studies Selected for ArtPlace America’s Youth Development Research

ArtPlace America and Creative Generation have partnered to conduct new research focused on arts, culture, and youth development. This work will explore the intersections of creative youth development, creative placemaking, and community development through community based, youth- and practitioner-led research. By the end of the year, a series of new web-based tools and resources will be created by and for practitioners operating in this space.

To accomplish this work, ArtPlace America and Creative Generation have convened an advisory committee to help guide the research, translation of findings, and communications to stakeholders. Representing numerous stakeholder groups in the field of arts and culture, education and youth development, and community development, the intergenerational committee has been convening since September. They are:

  • Mohammed Al Garawi; Alchemy; Akron, Ohio

  • Deborah Bicknell; Youth Consultant for Peace & Reconciliation; Portland, Maine

  • Mary Bordeaux; First People's Fund; Rapid City, South Dakota

  • Sarah Calderon; ArtPlace America; Brooklyn, New York

  • Samantha Francois; Tulane University; New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Dreama Gentry; Partners for Education at Berea College; Berea, Kentucky

  • Ashraf Hasham; Creative Advantage, City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture; Seattle, Washington

  • James Horton; Carnegie Hall; New York City, New York

  • Alberto Mejia, National Association of Latino Arts and Culture; Austin, Texas

  • Imani Scruggs; 4H at OSU Extension Cuyahoga County; Cleveland Heights, OH

  • Laenne Thompson; Youth Development & Out-of-School-Time Quality Improvement System Strategy Consultant; Chelsea, Michigan

Within the research design of this project, the Creative Generation team has developed a youth-led community-based research approach to study place-based, youth-led creative projects that tackle complex global challenges on a local scale. To do this, the team has identified nine partners in communities across the country:
