Visioning the Future of the Creative Equity Fund

The Creative Equity Fund housed at the Seattle Foundation and Creative Generation are pleased to announce their new collaboration to foster a collaborative learning environment among funders and grantees to reassess and refine the goals of the Creative Equity Fund to ensure it aligns with the evolving landscape, needs, and opportunities within the field.

Together, these stakeholders share a commitment to supporting arts and culture based approaches to influence systems change within the region and sector. The Creative Equity Fund invests in community-based organizations within King County that are by, for and about people of color using arts and culture as a strategy for racial justice. This project will explore concepts of trust-based philanthropy, funder collaboratives, and racial justice funding modalities in addition to community-based research alongside practitioners and funders in the region. As a result, the stakeholders of the Creative Equity Fund will articulate their visions for the fund, the supporters will craft actionable plans for the future, and the philanthropic sector will benefit from shared learning.

“Community visioning is essential to the future of collaborative and community-based projects seeking transformative change, like the Creative Equity Fund,” said Jeff M. Poulin, managing director of Creative Generation. “We, at Creative Generation, are proud to be working with this dynamic project to thoughtfully learn together and generously co-create the change they wish to see in their work.”

Creative Generation was founded in April 2019 as a research initiative and has grown its work throughout the United States and around the world. Through pioneering research in the arts and cultural education field – and the relentless support of arts and cultural educators in their work to cultivate the creative capabilities of young people – the organization regularly supports efforts to authentically engage community members in large-scale research to collectively inform the future of collaborative initiatives.

“The Creative Equity Fund is excited to partner with external knowledge partners, in Creative Generation, to reflect on our past five years of collaborative investment,” said Sally Gillis, managing director of strategy and partnerships at the Seattle Foundation. “Together, we will set the stage for the future of this effort aimed at supporting community rooted arts and culture efforts informing our region.”
