Focus: individual Development

Valerie HD Killebrew (she/her) serves as the Director of Leadership with a focus on individual development. In this role she oversees a team of colleagues, the personal and collective development of the team at Creative Generation, and a portfolio of projects focused on learning and leadership development.

Valerie considers herself a lifelong learner and artist. She is fascinated with how people learn, grow and develop in and through the arts. Coming from a family of artists herself, Valerie dabbles in all art forms, specifically dance, vocal music, theater, creative writing and pastel art. 

Beginning her career as a dance teaching artist and director of a multi-arts youth summer camp for youth ages 5-12. During this time Valerie also earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in a self designed major focused on art, education, and human development. Wanting to continue her learning, Valerie earned her Master’s Degree in Education through Harvard’s Arts in Education program.

From Harvard, Valerie accepted a position as Senior Director for Youth Development Programs with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, focusing on arts and youth leadership programming and experiences. Most notably, this position allowed her to design and implement the Youth Arts Initiative, a multi-year, multi-million dollar learning imitative in partnership with the Wallace Foundation. Valerie also had the opportunity to grow as a facilitator, designing and implementing twelve learning community, mini conferences and a three-part leadership development series for adult learners incorporating creativity and mindfulness. 

Valerie has maintained a close relationship to leading organizations and arts practitioners in the Creative Youth Development (CYD) field, which allowed her to participate in the launch of the CYD national partnership and subsequent work since 2014.

Valerie has an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and reflective practices that amplify all voices, unite communities and create healing, hope and positive change. She currently resides in Amherst, Massachusetts with her family and daughter, who is her greatest teacher.
