Creative Generation is pleased to announce the capstone project of Resident Danny Maggs. This project, “The Starving Artist: An Investigation into Multihyphenate Artistry” interrogates the concept of a “starving artist” and “true artistry” through literature review and interviews of multihyphenate artists. Through this capstone project, Danny will create and exhibit a profile for each of the artists interviewed, along with an artistic journey mapping of their artistry, and an analysis of the project’s main inquiries.
This project builds on qualitative research that Creative Generation has conducted surrounding multihyphenate artists, and expands the knowledge to include detailed profiles of individuals who identify as artists. Danny will engage with relevant literature to incorporate a holistic view of inquiries such as, “What is a starving artist, semantically and historically?” “Is struggle necessary to the craft of an artist?” “How do multihyphenate artists construct their careers and/or studies?” “How does elitism play into perceptions of artistry?”. This research will inform a set of three to four interviews with self-identified multihyphenate artists, which will then be constructed into profiles.
“Creative Generation has such a plethora of knowledge around this subject,” said Danny Maggs, Resident. “I’m excited to be able to add to this ongoing exploration and investigation and contribute some personal and individual perspectives. I’m interested to see how this will inform my artistic work going forward, as an artist in multiple disciplines who works in different areas. So far, it’s helped me to hone my skills in research and inquiry, and reinforced my own beliefs in the vastness of artistry as a career.”
Creative Generation was founded in April 2019 as a research initiative and has grown its work throughout the United States and around the world. Through pioneering research in the arts and cultural education field – and the relentless support of arts and cultural educators in their work to cultivate the creative capabilities of young people – the organization is currently conducting research on multihyphenate artists and their identities and careers.
“We are thrilled to support Danny through this personal and professional inquiry,” said Jeff M. Poulin, managing director of Creative Generation. “We, at Creative Generation, believe in disbanding outdated notions from our sector and empowering the next generation of practitioners to take hold of the narrative - this project will do just that!”
