Creative Generation is pleased to announce the Capstone Project of our Resident for Learning and Community Knowledge, Emma Lamberti. This project, “Arts Resources for Social Justice Arts Education (SJAE),” will provide public, free resources and lesson plans centered at the intersection of arts education and social justice.
Throughout her studies to become an educator, Emma observed a significant barrier for those who wanted to incorporate social justice-oriented creative work in their teaching: they didn’t know where to find anything, especially for free. For example: in music, finding compositions written by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) female composers can be extremely difficult in the most-used resource-banks, and even more difficult to find for free. In order to mitigate these challenges, this project will focus on aggregating public and free resources or activities that artists can use in their work, educators can teach with, or people can use to expand their artistic pursuits.
“We are thrilled to support this endeavor, recognizing the significant need for educators and teaching artists,” said Jeff M. Poulin, managing director of Creative Generation. “We, at Creative Generation, are proud of our previous work at the intersection of arts and social justice education in the classroom, and believe this resource will add a new depth to the work.”
Creative Generation was founded in April 2019 as a research initiative and has grown its work throughout the United States and around the world. Through pioneering research in the arts and cultural education field – and the relentless support of arts and cultural educators in their work to cultivate the creative capabilities of young people – the organization regularly incorporates social justice-oriented work in many projects and their own core values.
“If arts educators continue to resist incorporating social justice ideas into their work, then how do we expect the upcoming generation of young creatives to have the right tools to pursue justice and equitably lead,” said Emma Lamberti, Project Manager of Arts Resources for SJAE, “These resources are not only for educators, but for anyone who is looking to include more diversity into their work or lives.”
