South Sudanese young people have initiated creative projects which are aimed at creating awareness to the general public on preventive and life saving measures against the virus. Most of these projects are meant to sensitize the local population through creative content in various local languages spoken in South Sudan presented through both audio and video means. So far over ten songs has been recorded, produced, and disseminated in South Sudan to create awareness about the virus.

These studies are particularly timely for arts educators, arts administrators, and youth arts leaders. Given that the studies focus on barriers to access, and levers for the change, it provides a field-level perspective on pathways into the industry. Two community findings reports were released by ACI. Phase I, Examining Cultural Equity in the Arts, was published in January 2018. Phase II, Moves Toward Equity: Perspectives from Arts Leaders of Color, was published in September 2019. Both reports are downloadable on ACI’s website.

“They’ll probably say we have lots of sheep” and “Do they even know where we are?”. “I bet they think we’re part of Australia”. These were among the responses given when I asked the PreNZelers (Pretzel NZ) what they thought the ‘others’ would say about them. None of the preconceptions were to be revealed until after we had made our intro video - so my next question was ‘Well then, what do you want to say about you and about New Zealand? By ‘others’ I mean the young theatre makers in the other four pilot pretzel countries - Abu Dhabi, Canada, England and China. On this, they were sure. Sustainability, sport, food, scenery, weather, earthquakes and mythbusting!
